Barrier Island Sanctuary

Explore the dynamic coastal environment at the 34-acre Sanctuary and education center. Admire stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean from the observation deck, boardwalk, and overlook. Walk the 1-mile trail that winds through the barrier island, bringing visitors closer to both the ocean and the Indian River Lagoon.

Melbourne Beach Pier

The Indian River and Atlantic Railway Company completed the construction of the Melbourne Beach Pier in 1889 after a year-long building process. Made of wooden planks and pilings using a technique popularized in the latter part of the 19th century, it is the earliest known instance of the construction of such piers along the Indian River.

Spessard Holland South Beach Park

The 6.5-acre beach park is a popular spot for families with seasonal lifeguards. Amenities include small pavilions, a 100' dune boardwalk, and facilities such as restrooms, showers, and drinking fountains. Beachgoers can access surfing and fishing via dune crossovers.

Maritime Hammock Sanctuary

Explore protected habitats at the 150-acre Maritime Hammock Sanctuary located in the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. The sanctuary includes hiking trails, boardwalks, and an observation deck. Unfortunately, some non-native plants from a previous exotic plant nursery remain, but a non-native invasive plant removal project is in progress.
